History of Tamagawa

1929
  • Tamagawa Gakuen was inaugurated. There were 111 students in the Kindergarten, Elementary Division, Lower Secondary Division and "Juku," and 18 teachers.
  • Tamagawa Gakuenmae Station on the Odakyu Line opened.
1930
  • Tamagawa invited a leading Austrian skier, Hannes Schneider, to instruct its pupils in skiing. This made a great contribution to skiing in Japan.
  • Consecration ceremony for the chapel was held.
1931
  • A Danish gymnastic authority Niels Bukh was invited to Tamagawa, along with 25 others.
1932
  • The Children’s Encyclopedia was published, the first of its kind in Japan.
1937
  • The Choir, conducted by Joseph Rosenstock, performed Beethoven’s Symphony Number 9 (Ode to Joy). This was the first time that the Ninth Symphony was performed at Tamagawa.
1947
  • Permission was granted to establish Tamagawa University Faculty of Arts and Education and Faculty of Agriculture.
  • Permission was granted to establish the Lower Secondary Division under the Revised Junior High School Directive.
  • Permission was granted to establish the Elementary Division under the Revised Elementary School Directive.
1948
  • Permission was granted to establish the Upper Secondary Division under the Revised High School Directive.
1950
  • Permission was granted to establish the Department of Education by Correspondence.
    Kindergarten Division was approved by Tokyo Metropolitan government.
1952
  • Class ’52 graduated. It was the first group of graduates of Tamagawa University,and the long-cherished goal of an all-inclusive K-16 campus was realized.
1961
  • Tamagawa Goodwill Delegation visited Mexico. A series of demonstrations of Japanese Arts were given.
1962
  • Permission was granted to establish Tamagawa University Faculty of Engineering.
1963
  • Tamagawa and Seijyo Gakuen jointly hosted Mr. Krucken Hauser, the Principal of the Austrian National Ski School.
1965
  • Permission was granted to establish the Tamagawa Junior College for Women.
1966
  • Tübingen University Professor Dr. Bollnow visited the campus and was conferred with the title of Honorary Professor by Tamagawa University.
1967
  • Permission was granted to establish Tamagawa University Graduate School of Engineering.
  • Permission was granted to establish the Department of Childcare at Tamagawa Junior College for Women.
1968
  • Twenty-nine members of Tamagawa University Drama and Dance Troupe, representing Japan, participated in the Berlin Interdrama.
1971
  • Permission was granted to establish the Graduate School for Arts and Education.
1972
  • Permission was granted to add the Department of Foreign Languages to the Faculty of Arts and Education and Department of Computer Sciences to the Faculty of Engineering of Tamagawa University.
  • The 50-meter indoor heated pool which was officially endorsed by the Japan Swimming Association was completed.
1973
  • Tetsuro Obara was appointed President of Tamagawa University and Tamagawa Junior College for Women, Principal of Tamagawa Academy and CEO of the Tamagawa K-12 & University Board of Directors.
1976
  • Tamagawa opened a facility in Nanaimo, Canada.
1977
  • Permission was granted to establish the Graduate School of Agriculture.
1979
  • Permission was granted to establish the Advanced Certificate Program in Arts including Music, Fine Arts and Drama Majors.
1980
  • Tamagawa celebrated its 50th anniversary,with a ceremony held at the Nippon Budokan Hall in Tokyo.
1982
  • Tamagawa University’s Orchestra performed at the Salzburg Music Festival.
1983
  • New gymnasium and field were completed to commemorate Tamagawa’s 50th anniversary.
1984
  • Summer Study Tour in Canada of the Lower Secondary Division began.
1987
  • Tamagawa University Museum of Educational Heritage opened..
1989
  • Tamagawa celebrated its 60th anniversary with a musical ceremony held at the Nippon Budokan Hall in Tokyo.
  • Tamagawa University Drama and Dance Troupe performed in the United States and Canada.
1992
  • The new school building for the Elementary Division was completed.
1993
  • The first international exchange program at elementary school level using a television conferencing system was launched.
1994
  • Yoshiaki Obara was appointed President of Tamagawa University and Tamagawa Junior College for Women, Principal of Tamagawa Academy and CEO of the Tamagawa K-12 & University Board of Directors.
  • Tamagawa University Research Institute opened.
  • The Junior College Extension Course (General Education) was established.
1998
  • A computer network (CHaT Net) linking students, homes and teachers was launched.
2000
  • Tamagawa was certified in ISO14001 : the world’s first for a K-16 educational institution.
  • Permission was granted to build the Tamagawa University School of Business Administration.
2001
  • Permission was granted to establish the Tamagawa University College of Education and College of Arts.
2002
  • The Integrative Human Science Program of Tamagawa University was chosen as a 21st Century Center of Excellence Program by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science.
  • The Faculty of Arts and Education was transformed into the School of Humanities.
2003
  • Permission was granted to establish the Department of Liberal Arts in the School of Humanities and the Department of Early Childhood Care Development and Education in the College of Education.
  • Department of Mechanical Systems, Department of Intelligent Information Systems, Human Informatics Course, Department of Media-Network Science and Department of Management Science in the Faculty of Engineering were established.
2004
  • Department of Management Science in the Faculty of Engineering was certified in ISO9001.
  • K-12 divisions were accredited with CITA certification.
2005
  • Application was submitted to establish the Department of Bioenvironmental Systems and Department of Life Science in the Faculty of Agriculture.
2006
  • We named Tamagawa Gakuen "Tamagawa Academy" to be recognized as a global school.
  • Permission was granted to establish the Graduate School of Management.
  • Permission was granted to establish the Department of Comparative Cultures in the College of Humanities and the Department of Media Arts in the College of Arts.
  • Permission was granted to establish a Philosophy Major in the Graduate School of Humanities and the Graduate School of Education
  • Permission was granted to establish the Graduate School of Education.
  • We have revised our organization chart in English effectively.
    School of Humanities became College of Humanities.
    Faculty of Agriculture became College of Agriculture.
    Faculty of Engineering became College of Engineering.
    School of Business Administration became College of Business Administration.
  • Department of Intelligent Information Systems and Media-Network in the College of Engineering were also certified by ISO9001.
  • First year education at Tamagawa University was chosen as a "Support Program for Distinctive University Education (GP)" by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT)
  • Art Center (K12) opened.
  • Tamagawa Academy Upper Campus (grades 9-12) was completed.
  • K-12 Educational System, a 12-year education program from the preschool department and elementary school level to high school level started.
  • Agreement regarding linkage and cooperation for the cultivation of teachers, etc. with the Yokohama City board of education was concluded.
  • Agreement regarding linkage and cooperation between Tamagawa University and Machida City was concluded.
  • Permission was granted to establish the College of Arts and Sciences and the Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management in the College of Business Administration.
  • Permission was granted to establish the Graduate School of Engineering (Brain Informatics Major and System Sciences Major).
2007
  • Tamagawa Academy International Class (E-TRAC class) was established.
  • Tamagawa University Brain Science Institute was established.
  • Tamagawa University was fully accredited by the Japan University Accreditation Association(JUAA) and became a full member.
2008
  • Agreement regarding cooperation between Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education and the Graduate School of Education (Teaching Profession) was concluded.
  • Department of Intelligent Mechanical Systems and Department of Software Science were established.
  • Graduate School of Education (Teaching Profession) was established
  • "Origins of the Social Mind" program of Tamagawa University was chosen as a Global-COE (Center of Excellence) Program by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT)
  • Tamagawa Academy was chosen as a Super Science Highschool by MEXT
2009
  • Tamagawa Academy was authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) as a Middle Years Programme (MYP) school.
  • Memorandum promising mutual cooperation was concluded with Machida City Tourist and Convention Bureau.
2010
  • "Basic agreement regarding coordination and cooperation between universities in Aoba Ward and the Aoba Ward of Yokohama City" was concluded with Aoba Ward, Yokohama City.
  • Graduate School of Brain Sciences (Brain Sciences Major) Doctorate Program was established.
  • Master’s program in Human Sciences, Master’s program in English Education were established at Graduate School of Humanities.
  • Tamagawa Academy was authorized by International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) as a Diploma Programme (DP) School.
2011
  • Tamagawa University Quantum ICT Research Institute was established.
2013
  • Tamagawa University College of Tourism and Hospitality was established.
2014
  • The Graduate School of Brain Sciences was established.
  • Tamagawa Academy was selected as a Super Global High (SGH) School by MEXT.
  • Tamagawa University was selected as a Acceleration Program for University Education Rebuilding: AP (complex type of theme Ⅰ and Ⅱ ) by MEXT.
