Language plays an important role of supporting our intellectual activities. The language processing and cognitive faculties necessary to utilize language show dramatic growth during a several year period after birth due to mutual interaction with our surroundings. Though research on the topic is progressing, there are still many aspects regarding the process and mechanisms of this growth that are still not clear. Development of robots that communicate efficiently with people, in addition to supporting education and therapy centers, can contribute to clarifying these points from a multifaceted viewpoint that takes into account such fields as behavior, physiology, and neurology.

Therein, we are developing fundamental research of language development that aims at "Education that is Scholarship," and also developing the educational materials and educational programs that can apply that research to the classroom environment. "Baby Lab" is proceeding with a focus on observation and behavioral testing conducted with the focal point centering on the linguistic and cognitive development of infants. In addition to surveys of longitudinal development in the k-4 divisions of Tamagawa Academy, we are conducting surveys via a network linked to pre-schools and companies outside of the school's boundaries and gathering large scale data. In the education material and education program department, we are developing new teaching methods and educational material for foreign language education targeting early learning, children, and learners of a second language, as well as putting efforts into distribution and transmission of such. We are also aiming for cohort studies for Japanese-English development which also take "international class" children into account.
