Since 1999, Tamagawa University has been carrying out preparations to promote the transfer of technologies developed in the course of the University's research. In 2002, the University created a Tamagawa University Technology Licensing Office (TuTLO)at its Research Institute, and has been supporting patent applications related to university research, as well as the transfer of technologies. Since then, cooperative ventures involving tie-ups among industry, academia, and the government have been gaining greater visibility. Universities have been taking the lead in applying for patents, carrying out research with corporations, and creating venture capitalist firms. The government has further begun devoting more effort to transforming Japan into a country with a foundation grounded in intellectual property. Taking such developments into consideration, in April 2005, we decided to create a Office of Intellectual Property at Tamagawa.
The Office of Intellectual Property does not deal solely with the intellectual property amassed over the years with Tamagawa or the patents and other fruits of research of the College of Engineering and College of Agriculture, but also taps into the research findings of the university's departments in the humanities and the social sciences to make contributions to society.
The Office of Intellectual Property plans to make such contributions by collecting and making public the research and findings of the employees of Tamagawa Academy and Tamagawa University; by tying up with corporations outside of Tamagawa; by building cooperative frameworks with local areas; and by promoting wide-ranging tie-ups between industry and academia, and among industry, academia, and government. |
