IB Learner Profile
The Learner Profile represents the core of international education in the International Baccalaureate® (IB). Through the Approaches to Teaching and Learning, the International Baccalaureate aims to develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world. The IB Learner Profile represents 10 attributes that are valued across all IB school and programmes, including both the Middle Years Programme and Diploma Programme here at Tamagawa. The IB Learner Profile describes a broad range of human capacities and responsibilities that go beyond academic success. They imply a commitment to help all members of the school community learn to respect themselves, others, and the world around them, having strong links to Tamagawa’s Zenjin philosophy.
The Learner Profile plays an important part in the Middle Years Programme at Tamagawa Academy. We give students a wide range of opportunities to put the learner attributes into practices, both inside and outside of the classroom. Our Service as Action, Round Square, Super Global High School, and Model United Nations programmes offer the students the chance to take part in, and lead, organised events, as well as create ones for themselves. We encourage our students to use these attributes as pathways to becoming responsible members of local, national and global communities.
Teachers at Tamagawa encourage students to apply the attributes to their everyday lives and nominate those who have shown outstanding practice in one or more of the attributes for awards in our monthly IB Assembly. The IB Learner Profile is also celebrated in our end of year graduation ceremony, where two students per year group receive a Learner Profile award based on their performance through the attributes over the course of the year.
