ビーバーフォード先生国際バカロレアと私の研究

Last year in August, I joined the Graduate School of Education, and I have enjoyed learning about the institution's history and culture.  It is always a challenge to understand a new work place's culture, but my colleagues and the administration have made fitting into the new environment an enjoyable experience.

昨年の8月に玉川大学大学院教育学研究科に着任して以来、この大学と学園の歴史と文化について楽しく学んでいます。新しい職場の文化を理解することは容易いことではありませんが、同僚の教員や管理部門や事務職員の皆様に支えられて、新しい職場、新しい環境に馴染むことも心地よい経験となっています。

I have been involved in international education for the past 22 years in a variety of capacities and with the International Baccalaureate (IB) since 2001. I worked as a primary, elementary and high school classroom teacher in international schools in Taiwan, Qatar, Sri Lanka and Indonesia. I have held IB Coordinator Positions in the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP), IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the IB Diploma Programme (DP) and spend two years as the head of an IB school in Dili, Timor Leste. I served as the IB Middle Years Programme Regional Manager from 2007 to 2012 in the IB's Singapore Office. As the Regional Manager, I given the opportunity to visit both public and private IB schools in 21 countries, helping teachers and administrators develop and implement the IB Middle Years Programme at their school sites. In 2007 I visited Tamagawa Academy for the first time to deliver the first formal IB Professional Development to the Middle School Staff.

この22年間、私は様々な形で国際教育に関わり、2001年からは国際バカロレア（IB）にも関わって来ました。 台湾、カタール、スリランカとインドネシアで小学校や高等学校の教員として勤務し、IBの初等教育プログラム（PYP）、中等教育プログラム（MYP）、ディプロマプログラム（DP）のコーディネータとしての経験もあり、東チモールのディリのIB認定校での校長も勤めました。2007年から2012年にかけては国際バカロレア機構（IBO）のMYP地域マネージャーとしてIBのシンガポールオフィスで勤務していました。この間、アジア太平洋地域の21か国の公立私立の学校を訪問し、それぞれの学校でのMYPの導入のために教員や管理職の方々を支援してきました。2007年には認定前の玉川学園にも訪れ、中学年担当の先生方のIB研修を実施しました。

In 2015 I was offered the opportunity to help design and establish the IB Educator Program at the University of Tsukuba. My time at the University of Tsukuba gave me a chance to better understand the professional development needs of Japanese and International teachers as they move from traditional curricula to one of the IB's curricular frameworks. While I have been delivering and designing IB professional development as a workshop leader and global PD contractor for years, working with the IB Educator Certificates has been truly rewarding. The IB has a suite of two and three-day workshops which deal with specific aspects of programme implementation, which are valuable experiences for teachers both new to and experienced with the programmes, but the IB Educator Certificates delve into the theory behind IB pedagogy and ask students to analyze the relationship between practice and theory critically.

2015年からは筑波大学でのIB教員養成プログラムの立ち上げに参加し、伝統的なカリキュラムからIBのカリキュラムフレームワークへの移行を目指す日本の学校や日本のインターナショナルスクールにおける教員研修の必要性について理解するに至りました。IBの教員研修の一環としてIBワークショップの講師役を務めたり、IBの非常勤の教員研修担当として活動する中、IB教員資格に関わるようになったことに大変やりがいを感じています。IBは2日間もしくは3日間のワークショップという教員研修の場も提供しています。ここではIBプログラムを実施する上で必要な特定の側面の数々を取り上げます。これは新しくIB教育に関わる教員やすでに一定の経験のある教員の双方に有益な機会ですが、IB教員養成資格は、IB教育の方法の礎となる理論的背景をも掘り下げ、理論と実践を往還し、その関係性についての批判的分析をも求めます。

Tamagawa is recognized to offer the Certificates in Teaching and Learning for MYP and DP, and the Advanced Certificate in Teaching and Learning Research and our team is currently investigating ways to improve our program.

現在、玉川大学大学院ではCertificates in Teaching and Learning （MYP/DP）とAdvanced Certificate in Teaching and Learning Researchの2種類のIB教員資格を取得出来ます。そして、我々は、本学でのIBECプログラムの改善の検討を進めているところです。

This fall we will start offering the courses associated with the MYP in English and I am very excited about the prospect of further developing the IB Teacher Training Programme at Tamagawa.

この秋からはMYPの授業を英語でも開講します。本学でのIB教員養成プログラムの更なる充実を楽しみにしています。
