System Neuroscience Department What is the human intelligence? This department conducts research regarding the mechanisms of the brain which create the intellect and presents the research results worldwide. The characteristic of this department is the interdisciplinary quality of research. Scholars in fields such as brain physiology, experimental psychology, and computational neuroscience work together and form linkages to holistically advance brain research. The focus of research is the higher functions of the brain. We have accumulated frontier research achievements on topics such as manifestations of behavior, regulatory mechanisms, and memory information processing mechanisms. In the future we will pursue in an integrated manner the mechanisms that generate intellect, including the aspect of "emotion" and "intent" which support "knowledge." Human brain analysis department The primary objective of this department is measuring the brain activity of human subjects non-invasively in order to research the higher brain functions of the human being such as intellect, cognition, and decision-making. For this purpose, we have introduced MRI equipment that can chart brain activity as images and measure that activity. Through the imaging and analysis of f-MRI, we have begun research into the structure of higher functions for which the brain is responsible. We are also on the cusp of researching human language and cognitive functions and researching brain function growth. Because this can also be applied to education, we are anticipating research collaborations with individuals in educational fields. Social behavior brain science department Targeting phenomena connected to the social behavior of living creatures, this department contrasts behavior with brain function and conducts research that clarifies related mechanisms. Together with the research institute Honey Bee Science Research Center, and using mainly social insects, we are advancing research that pursues the question of just how is learning behavior and social behavior linked to the genetic regulation of the nervous system. Brain science literacy department The brain must be approached from every angle, including philosophy, ethics, religion, and psychology. The research targets of this department are the relationship between the conscious mind and the subconscious, life and cultural views, and the relationship between life and matter. In addition, considering the extent that the latest results of brain science impact our life view and lifestyle view and proposing the ideals of brain science with an eye on future social phenomena of humankind are also vital research activities.
