The Biosystems & Biofunctions Research Center has two divisions: the Environmental Sciences Research and Applied Life Sciences Research. At the Environmental Sciences Research Division, the main purpose is research into the greenification of deserts, and the center studies the Unzen/Fugen Mountain Range in Nagasaki and the use of peat provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). At the Applied Life Sciences Research Division, research is being conducted on acquiring energy from autotrophs and returning energy to the natural environment.
