| 講演内容 | Morality is ubiquitous, with social norms defining acceptable behaviors across cultures. As a biological adaptation, our moral sense supports group living by regulating social interactions and promoting cooperation beyond kinship. However, moral beliefs—especially when held as absolute and universal—can also foster dogmatism, intolerance, political polarization, and even extreme violence. Moral convictions engage emotion and activate the brain's reward system, generating high confidence and closed-mindedness. This, in turn, leads to confirmation bias, in which individuals are unwilling to seek or accept corrective information, regardless of its accuracy. In this lecture, I will examine how moralization strengthens beliefs and attitudes, increasing both their certainty and perceived importance. Drawing on empirical evidence from evolutionary anthropology, neuroscience, psychology, and political science, I will show how moralized issues entrench ideological extremism and disrupt cost-benefit analysis. While moral convictions can promote social progress, they also carry destructive potential, fueling intolerance and dogmatism. |
