教育学術情報図書館長からのメッセージ
教育学術情報図書館は、2015（平成27）年4月に大学教育棟2014の使用開始に合わせて、その中に新たな図書館として開設されました。2024年度でまだ10年目ですが、その始まりは玉川学園創立の年、1929年（昭和4年）8月に開館した玉川学園図書館にまで遡ります。当時はキャンパス中央にある聖山の斜面、現在の礼拝堂の東北側に建物が作られました。その後、1948（昭和23）年6月に玉川大学図書館に名称変更され、蔵書数の増加に対応して建物の移動を複数回経て、現在の教育学術情報図書館となりました。
教育学術情報図書館は現代の教育研究のニーズに応えるべく、従来の図書館に比べてより多くの機能を果たすよう作られています。図書の検索・閲覧・貸し出しという基本的な機能は同じですが、他の学生と議論しながら学修を進めたり、授業での発表を練習したりできるよう館内にラーニング・コモンズを設置しています。その中にはITサポート・デスクおよび学修サポート・デスクが設けられ、学修・研究の支援も行っています。また、英語名称であるLibrary and Multimedia Resource Centerが示すように、伝統的な紙の図書だけでなく、急速に進むデジタル化に対応し様々なデジタル情報資源も提供しています。
私の学生時代は、図書館が当時の文学部第Ⅲ校舎（現在の本部棟）にありました。同校舎を使用する文学部外国語学科の学生として図書館は頻繁に利用していました。その当時からすると現在の教育学術情報図書館は随分と規模も大きく、機能も多岐に渡り驚かされます。図書館は玉川学園創立以来着実に成長してきました。本学創立者の小原國芳は図書館で100万冊の蔵書を目指しました。創立者の好きな言葉であった「夢」の一つと言えます。その蔵書100万冊は近年達成することができました。しかし、それは夢の終わりではありません。玉川学園は2029年に創立100周年を迎えますが、それに向けて、さらにはその先を見つめて、成長し続ける図書館でありたいと考えています。
図書館は利用していただいて初めて図書館となります。利用者がいなければ本の倉庫となってしまいます。皆様にはぜひ学修および研究の拠点として大いに教育学術情報図書館を活用していただきたいと思います。教育学術情報図書館は、そのために必要とされる図書等の学術情報資源やラーニング・コモンズ等の機能を充実させるとともに、利用しやすいよう環境を整備し、皆様一人一人の夢の実現を支援いたします。

Message from the Director of the Library and Multimedia Resource Center
The Library and Multimedia Resource Center (LMRC) was established in University Hall 2014 in 2015 when we started using the building. Although it has been just ten years since then, it originated in Tamagawa Gakuen Library, which opened in 1929, when Tamagawa Academy was founded. It was first built northeast of the Original Chapel on the slope of Seizan, located in the center of the campus. It was renamed Tamagawa University Library in 1948, moved to a few other locations in response to its growing book collection, and finally developed into the current LMRC.
The LMRC has broader functions than traditional libraries to satisfy recent educational and research needs. In addition to basic ones like searching, reading, and borrowing books, it contains the Learning Commons, where students can discuss and study for classes together or practice class presentations. The Learning Commons has the IT Support Desk and the Academic Support Desk to support learning and research activities. Furthermore, as its name suggests, it stores not only traditional paper books but also digital resources of various sorts to accommodate rapidly developing digitalization.
In my university days, the library was located in the then College of Humanities Building III (currently, Headquarters Building). I often used it as a Department of Foreign Languages student who mainly studied in the building. Surprisingly, the LMRC is much larger and has wider functions. The library has shown steady growth since Tamagawa Academy was founded. One of the dreams OBARA Kuniyoshi, the founder of Tamagawa University and Academy, had was for the library to hold 1,000,000 books. The LMRC has recently achieved the target, but it isn’t the end of our dream. Tamagawa University and Academy will celebrate its centenary anniversary in 2029. Looking forward to the milestone and beyond, I hope the LMRC continues to be a growing library.
A library can be a library only when people use it. Without users, it would become a large book storage warehouse. I hope you make the most of the LMRC as a base for your learning and research. To maximise your experience, it will continue to improve its book and other academic resources, Learning Commons functions, and other services, and support every one of you in realizing your dreams.
