「探究」

「敎育は分量や暗記、詰込みや點數（てんすう）ではないのです……推理、判断、思考、敢行、想像、應用、發明等の諸能力こそはホントの力なのです……このツルハシを鍛へることがホントの學習の眼目の一つではないか」（『玉川塾の敎育』1930年）などと、 小原國芳は至る所で語り、そして繰り返し書いた。世の中がそうしたことに無理解だったからである。
近年教育現場では小学校から高校まで「探究学習」「生きる力」という、自ら課題を見出し、調べ、まとめ、討議、発表する学習活動に取り組むようになった。そうした学習は大学では、より高度な研究へと発展していく。
戦後、新制玉川大学発足と同時に農学部教授として赴任した岡田一次博士により、1950（昭和25）年からミツバチ研究が始まった。現在、ミツバチ科学研究センターとなり、ミツバチやその他のハチ類に関する研究成果の発表と普及に努めている。スズメバチ被害の報道などがあると、本学教員が解説するのを見た方も多いだろう。ハチの研究が世に認められているからだ。研究が始まり70年を過ぎても今なお新しい発見があり、科学雑誌『ネイチャー』への掲載もあるなど国際的にも注目されている。
私事になるが小学部（当時）勤務時、白衣を着た方が、私の教室前の草花をルーペで覗く姿をよく見かけた。しばらくしてその方が岡田博士であると知った。同じ草花を何度も何度も観察されていたことを覚えている。そうした岡田博士の研究姿勢がミツバチ科学研究センターに脈々と受け継がれているのだろう。

“Pursuit of Truth”
Kuniyoshi used to say, “Education should not be judged by the amount of time one has spent cramming and having excessive concern about test scores and grades. It should be regarded as a pickax to dig deeper and broader into students’ insatiable curiosity, great enthusiasm, and burning passion for pursuing the truth”. Although in Japan the word tankyu is often translated into English as ‘inquiry’, Kuniyoshi would strongly disagree with this translation.
When he used the word tankyu, he always meant ‘research’. The word ‘research’ implies pursuit of truth, and this is why he started jiyu kenkyu (individual research) at Tamagawa. He also expected each student who is deeply committed to jiyu kenkyu to continue and develop his/her research activity into a real research project which may contribute to society.
