「讀書惟古今」

「讀書惟古今」は「書を読み古今を惟（おも）う」と読む。小原國芳の読書体験を『自伝』 などから拾ってみよう。小学校高学年では『論語』『日本外史』、電信技手の時は徳冨蘆花『思ひ出の記』『自然と人生』など。鹿児島県師範生の時は、後の学究生活の基礎となる倫理学や教育学の大冊、広島高等師範学校では英文科でもありワーズワースらの著作。エマースンからは深い人生観を与えられたと言う。
京都帝国大学哲学科では西田幾多郎、朝永三十郎、波多野精一など京都哲学黄金時代と呼ばれる教授陣の下で、『善の研究』『基督教の起源』など恩師たちの著書、そして哲学や宗教学などの多くの古典と出会い思索を深めた。卒業論文「宗教による教育の救済」執筆のために大八車に積むほどの図書を読みあさった。
この時の読書経験について「戦前戦後を通して、不動の教育精神は全く、京都哲学で育てられたオカゲだといえます」と回想している。そうした体験をもとに「古典を特に味読して下さい。古典を! 古典とは幾百年、幾千年を通して、世界の人たちが生命をつないどる宝典なのです」（『全人教育』204号）と述べている。
また「私の読書案内―古典のすすめ」と題して「ペスタロッチの教育理想とその著作の数々について」（『全人教育』263 号）紹介している。「永遠の生命となるような本」として『隠者の夕暮』『酔人の妻』などをあげ、「ペスタロッチ先生の鋭い直感力、更に偉大なる神様のままの教育労作、親心そのままの崇高なる教育体験を洞察せねばなりませぬ」と、敬愛したペスタロッチへの思いを謳（うた）っている。

“Reading Books and Imagining History”
Kuniyoshi read a variety of books. He read Rongo and Nihon Gaishi（ a historical book on Japan） in elementary school. While working for the telegraph office, he read Omoide no Ki （Record of Memories） and Shizen to Jinsei （Nature and Life） written by Roka Tokutomi.
At Kagoshima Normal School, he read a great number of books on ethics and education, and at Hiroshima Higher Normal School, he also read English literature by William Wordsworth and others. At Kyoto Imperial University, he met great professors including Kitaro Nishida, the founder of the Kyoto School, and read their works.
In later years, he asserted that “Students must read classical literature of all kinds to touch upon many ways of thinking through the history of humankind”. Through an encounter with various kinds of books such as philosophy books and classical literature, students may be deep in contemplation.
