「前田家への書簡」
小原國芳 筆蹟

本史料は「叔父様叔母様篤志様津か様御揃いで御元氣でせふ 直ぐ手紙を上げる積りでし多が……」と認めた小原國芳18歳の時の書簡である（写真は一部）。
小原は高等小学校卒業後、鹿児島県の電気通信技術伝習生養成所を修了。鹿児島郵便局勤務を経て大隅半島の大浜電信局に配属された。電信局の大根占移転に伴い前田氏宅に下宿した。のちに前田氏宅の襖の張り替え修理時、下張りとして使われていたこの書簡が見つかった。
下宿先の娘さんの師範学校進学のための受験勉強をみているうちに、寺子屋師匠であった祖父のような教職に就くことと決心し、鹿児島県師範学校を目指し合格した。書簡では師範合格の報告のために大根占から故郷久志に向かう船中の様子や、小原の弟や妹の小学校卒業についてふれている。
この書簡は小原が1905（明治38）年4月に師範学校へ入学した年のもので、教育博物館が所蔵している小原の筆蹟で一番古いものとなる。18歳の青年が書き綴ったとは思えない熟達した筆運びで、読む者に語りかけてくるような不思議な魅力に引き込まれる。
現代は科学技術の進歩により、一瞬にして世界中の人々との通信が可能となった。その対極にあるのが手書きによる手紙のやり取りだろう。小原からの年賀状の返信を夏頃にもらった卒業生も多いのではないかと思う。この書簡からは小原の思いや、相手を思って書き綴られていることが直に伝わってくる。
本史料は教育博物館にて常設展示されている。是非見ていだたきたい。

A Letter to the Maeda Family
This is a letter written by Kuniyoshi at the age of eighteen. It is the oldest handwritten document by Kuniyoshi preserved in the Tamagawa University Museum of Education.
After graduation from higher elementary school in Kagoshima, he enrolled in a telecommunication technology training institute. Upon completion of the course, he was assigned to the Kagoshima Post Office and then transferred to Ohama Telegraph Station. When the telegraph station changed its location to Onejime, Kuniyoshi started to live with the Maeda family.
As he tutored a daughter of the Maedas, Kuniyoshi rekindled his aspiration towards teaching. He was accepted to Kagoshima Normal School in April 1905 and then wrote this letter to the Maedas.
