「詩に興り 禮に立ち 樂に成る」

「詩に興り 禮に立ち 樂に成る」は『論語』「泰伯第八」に載る言葉だ。『論語』は孔子の言行や弟子たちとの対話を記したものだ。ここでいう詩とは中国最古の詩集『詩経』をさす。
小原國芳の理解者であり親交もあった武者小路実篤は詩について語っている。詩は「思い邪無し」であり「本心の要求そのままのあらわれである……礼があって、皆共に立つことが出来る……其処で楽が我等の到達点になる」（『論語私感』）としている。音楽、すなわち芸術によって人格が完成されると解すことができる。なんと！ ２５００年前の中国で全人教育について語られているではないか。
小原は「私は今でも、日本の全大学から高校の情操教育、否な、魂の浄化を心から叫びます……支那の大聖者孔子様はおしえられましたね。『詩に興り 禮に立ち 樂に成る』と！ 詩は内心の要求で、他と衝突することもある。礼があって共に立つことが出来るが、共に生き調和するためには音楽が必要です」（『全人教育論』）と述べている。
小原の『幼き日』を読むと、生まれ故郷の鹿児島県久志の「懐かしい船歌のメロデー」「十五夜」「豐歳祭」などの音楽にまつわる話がのっている。豊漁と無事に戻ってきた感謝を込めた「船歌」のかけ声の歌こそは「私の一生をとほして、音樂的な、藝術的な、宗敎的な感情を作り上げる上に、大きな要素となつた」と言う。少年國芳の周りには豊かな生活音楽があった。このことが全人教育で芸術重視の元になったのだろう。

We are Perfected Through Music
In the Analects of Confucius, “Tai Bo,” Chapter 8, Book 8, the Master said, “It is by poetry that the mind is aroused. It is by the rules of propriety that the character is established. It is through music that we are perfected”. Kuniyoshiʼs close friend, Mushanokoji Saneatsu, a Japanese novelist, playwright, poet, artist, and philosopher, wrote in his book Rongo Shikan（ Personal Opinions on the Analects of Confucius） that “Music is the culmination of our lives”.
Kuniyoshi himself wrote in Zenjinkyoiku Ron（ Theory of Zenjin Education） that “Music is indispensable for people to live together in harmony”. From his childhood, Kuniyoshi was surrounded by music, so this may be one reason why music and the arts came to hold such an important place in his vision of Zenjin education.
